How Does Your Garden Grow?

Many of the Ebenezer Child Care Centers serving Greater Milwaukee are letting their children get closer to nature this summer, including our Wauwatosa Day Care Center.

According to Yvette Stamper, Center Coordinator for Wauwatosa’s Ebenezer Child Care Center, “In an effort to foster the love of the outdoors in our children, our center decided to plant a pizza garden this year complete with tomatoes, onions, basil, oregano, peppers and chives. We also planted some cucumbers and strawberries for fun! And, at the end of the summer our kids will be making pizza with all of the delicious veggies and herbs we have harvested.”

Stamper says the staff and children at the Ebenezer Child Care Center in Wauwatosa have also planted a sensory garden in buckets and pots along their playground fence with lots of different plants that have unique textures and smells. “Then there are sunflowers and on the opposite end of the playground we have a teepee that we have made that has netting on it and peas growing around to eventually cover the teepee.”

“Gardening is fun and we want our children to learn this,” says Stamper. “It’s a great way to help our environment and learn how to eat healthier!”
