Summer Safety – June 2010

Summertime offers many wonderful opportunities for outdoor fun such as swimming, biking, and just playing in the great outdoors.  However, all of these activities should require you to think “safety first!”

According to Samantha Stern, training and development director for Ebenezer Child Care Centers, “It’s easy to get caught up in the fun of summer and forget about the importance of safety.”

Water Safety

If your children don’t know how to swim, Stern says summer is the perfect time to enroll them in lessons. If your children do know how to swim, Stern warns that no child should ever be left unattended near water of any depth.

Stern also suggests that you invest in life jackets that are appropriate for your children’s weight and height to use when boating or swimming to help ensure that your children stay safe.

Bike Safety

Biking, another fun summer activity, also requires safety precautions. Stern says that both children and adults should always wear their helmets when biking.

She also recommends that you check to make sure that the bikes you use are in good working condition and have plenty of reflectors. In addition, you should always wear bright clothing when biking. Finally, always ride with traffic when riding on the street, and make sure you know the appropriate hand signals.

Sun and Heat Safety

According to Stern, “Whenever your children are going outside in the sun and heat, make sure they have on plenty of sunscreen, a cap to protect their face and eyes, and a bottle of water to keep them hydrated.”

Babies should be kept out of direct sunlight whenever possible, and remember to never leave your children or pets in an unattended car for any amount of time in the summer.
